On June 3, 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada released their report on Canada’s residential school system and its impact on Canada’s First Nations peoples. The report, 6 years and almost 7000 witnesses in the making, characterizes the residential schools tragedy as ‘cultural genocide’ whose effects are still being felt. The report includes 94 recommendations to further the process of reconciliation, however these recommendations are not binding on the government; the CBC reports that the Commission is pushing for the implementation of these recommendations and urges all Canadians to do the same. Reconciliation, the report says will be a “multi-generational journey that involves all Canadians.”
