Reyhaneh Jabbari was executed in Tehran on Saturday morning. In 2009, she was sentenced to death for the 2007 murder of Morteza Abdolali Sarbandi, a doctor and a former Intelligence Ministry employee. Jabbari claimed that she acted in self-defence when Sarbandi attempted to sexually assault her. There are persistent accusations by rights organizations that Jabbari’s trial was unfair, and that the judiciary did not properly investigate the Sarbandi’s death. It is believed that Iran has executed more than 500 persons this year.
