The West Coast Prison Justice Society is filing a complaint on behalf of inmate Laura Bulyk. Laura, a transgender inmate, alleges that she was subjected to bullying and sexual abuse from both fellow prison inmates and correctional facility staff.
The WCPJS is requesting substantial policy changes including the requirement that staff address the inmates by the appropriate pronoun, and the end of placing inmates based solely on biological sex. The WCPJS argues that placing prisoners based on their biological sex can lead to a constant risk of sexual assault for vulnerable transgender women.
