Amnesty International has called on Qatar’s government to stop “dragging its feet” regarding a number of urgently needed reforms of its labour laws.   Qatar was awarded the 2022 World Cup and the subsequent construction boom has resulted in a substantial influx of migrant workers.  Qatar’s “kafala” system governing migrant workers has been singled out as highly exploitative and conducive to forced labour by the international community.  Six months ago, the Qatari government announced a series of reforms to reduce worker exploitation, however, Amnesty characterizes progress in this area as “woefully insufficient”.
