Gambia became the latest country to introduce draconian anti-homosexual laws it is being reported.  The bill, passed on Oct 9 but only obtained by the Associated Press on Nov 21, criminalizes “aggravated homosexuality” and can result in a life sentence for those who are “serial offenders” and those living with HIV or AIDS.  Human Rights organizations point out that exactly what constitutes “aggravated homosexuality”, or even “homosexual act” for that matter, is not defined in Gambian law and therefore this legislation could be used to persecute the entire LGBTI community in the country.  Steve Cockburn, deputy regional director for West and Central Africa at Amnesty International, wrote that “[t]he new law treats consensual, private sexual activity between adults of the same sex – which should not be a crime – in the same way as rape and incest.”
